Primo Hernandez, a construction worker who claimed $2,622 in unpaid wages and materials, came to the Worker Center in spring 2008. He said that after his short trip to Mexico, his former employer, Tommy Milutinovic of Metro Urban Construction Corp., refused to pay him for the jobs he had done. According to Primo and other people the Worker Center staff talked to, Milutinovic failed o pay other workers as well. Despite the numerous phone calls, letters sent from the Worker Center and Pilsen community organizations, multiple visits at the office and protests in front of the company’s residence, the employer never responded to the attempts to resolve the case. During one of the actions Milutinovich drove into the parking lot in his semi-truck, but left immediately when he saw Primo and other community supporters in front of his offices.
In September 2008 with the help of the Worker Center Primo filed a Pro-Se complaint for the amount that was owed to him. In November 2009, after over a year of the law suit, the Pro-Se court finally awarded Primo his owed wages. Throughout the duration Primo participated in many Worker Center events, actions and became a very engaged member of the organization.
